A tornado caused damage in New Port Richey, Florida on May 31, 2022, but thankfully no one was hurt. There was damage to homes, vehicles, downed trees, and debris tossed throughout the area. Residents watched the funnel clouds appear before their eyes. According to WFLA.com, one resident said she watched the funnel cloud form, but then shortly after she ran inside and hid in the bathroom. “It just started taking things from the ground and turning it around, turn it, spinning it, winds started forming and debris started flying, everything started flying,” she said.

Wind and debris being thrown against roofs and tornadic-wind-driven hail can cause great damage to roof tiles and shingles. It is imperative to have a roof inspection after an incident like this, to avoid water seepage under tiles and shingles due to cracked, chipped, or sheared-off tiles or shingles. Early in April, La Belle, Florida had a hail storm, dropping golf-ball-sized stones, RestoreMasters aided in the aftermath of that with roof inspections and insurance claim reporting.

RestoreMasters offers free roof inspection, click here for more details.

The local hail and tornado map indicates the path of the tornado (black), in the southeast area of the hail storm, which dropped up to 1” hail (yellow).

It is imperative to deal with roof damage immediately, with emergency coverage either shrink wrapping or tarping, in order to prevent water damage from future rain storms. RestoreMasters has experts in the area who are working to provide emergency solutions.

Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems. Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged. The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. Circumstances do not always allow for immediate repair of roof leaks. In the meantime, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can cover the roof or affected area with a tarp or with a durable plastic shrink wrap material, until such a time when more permanent repairs can be made. We need to stop more moisture damage, so we can prevent mold growth.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged. Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately. And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
