High winds ripped roofs off buildings and toppled trees Monday, June 13th, as hailstones added insult to injury across Madison, Milwaukee, and Southern Wisconsin. Local news reports indicate displaced property owners are in desperate need of emergency roof repair. RestoreMasters has commercial roof inspection services experts in the field to help facilitate claims and expedite property restoration.

“Along Wright Street, near E. Washington Ave. on Madison’s east side, a sizable portion of the roof, as wide as an apartment or two, was ripped off, sending wooden shards raining down pieces on vehicles parked a street over from the apartment. Dane Co. Executive Joe Parisi and Dane County Emergency Management Director Charles Tubbs, Sr., said they were planning on going to the 1500 block of Wright Street to assess the damage,” NBC affiliate WMTV 15 reported. “Near Harding and Richard Street, also on the east side, a large tree was ripped from the ground by the roots and came down on a home, causing significant damage. The Madison Police Department has blocked off streets near the area of S. Williamson Street and S. Ingersoll St. as power crews respond to the area.”

Commercial property owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection to fast-track insurance claims. The first step to recovering from the weather-related losses is conducting a commercial roof inspection and getting an emergency roof repair quote.

A local wind and hailstorm damage map shows a long severe weather pattern. The front stretches from just north of Cross Plains, east across Lake Mills and Jefferson, to Lake Michigan through south Milwaukee. The yellow areas on the perimeters of the severe weather event show hail up to 1.25 inches peppering communities. The orange sections indicate hailstones ranging up to 1.25 to 2.5 inches in diameter pounded automobiles and caused storm roof damage. Gray areas near Madison and Milwaukee show high winds that reached tornado strength and ripped roofs apart.

Hail Map, Madison - Milwaukee, Southern Wisconsin, June 13, 2022

Storm reports by citizens and news centers have been posted to social media:

The National Weather Service tornado, high wind, and hail damage map shows intense storm clusters over Southern Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and South Dakota. All told, there were six tornadoes, 372 high wind incidents, and 54 hailstorms on Monday, June 13th. Traditional and social media reports suggest Southern Wisconsin suffered among the worst wind and hail property damage, including the following.

  • Big Bend: The Waukesha County community took hailstone hits the size of golf balls.
  • Cottage Grove: As a result of hail larger than half-dollars, buildings will require roof repairs.
  • Deerfield: Ping pong ball-sized hailstones covered the Dane County village.
  • Franklin: Hail the size of ping pong balls blanketed the community.
  • Greendale: Ping pong ball-sized ice stones made landfall, damaging metal roofing systems.
  • Helenville: Wind gusts in Jefferson County exceeded 60 mph, driving hail property damage on roofs and siding.
  • Jefferson: Business districts require emergency roof repair after ice up to 1.75 inches in diameter struck flat and low-slop roofing systems.
  • Johnson Creek: Golf ball-sized ice chunks pummeled rooftops.
  • Madison: Building siding and roof damage were attributed to hail the size of half-dollars propelled by extreme winds.
  • Middleton: Trees and limbs were snapped and transformers sustained heavy damage.
  • Milwaukee County: Winds of 59 mph drove hail half-inch hailstones in Saint Francis. South Milwaukee saw trees toppled at Grant Park and Hales Corners.
  • North Prairie: Hailstone strikes cracked shingles as ice the size of golf balls pelted automobiles and structures. Powerlines were downed and residents reported seeing debris flying by office windows.
  • Oconomowoc: Significant property and storm roof damage were reported after golf ball-sized hailstones made impact at 4 pm.
  • Sullivan: Neighborhoods and business districts sustained damage from hail the size of hen eggs.
  • Sun Prairie: Social media reports and images confirm hailstones the size of tennis balls impacted commercial buildings.
  • Waukesha County: High winds exceeded 60 mph in Muskego, Dousman, and western areas of the county. Powerlines were downed and tree limbs struck buildings.

The American Red Cross reportedly opened temporary shelters, and residents are directed to Madison College, 1701 Wright Street, for food, water, and shelter as apartment complex owners assess roof damage. RestoreMasters dispatched commercial roof inspection and repair specialists to Oconomowoc, WI for hail damage insurance claim and repair assistance on June 10, 2022.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail. Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds. Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.

After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system. If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Symptoms of storm damage problems do not always show up immediately. And insurance companies can require you to get a claim in before their deadline.
