Commercial Roof Inspections in Manhattan, KS for Wind Damage Insurance Claims After Storm on June 11, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Straight-line winds topping 100 mph were responsible for an estimated $10 million in property damages losses to Manhattan, KS, and the surrounding area on Saturday, June 11th. Twisters touched down in neighboring counties and nearly overrun Riley County as officials waited for commercial roof inspection experts to complete assessments. RestoreMasters sent emergency roof repair teams to Manhattan to provide commercial roof inspection services and help property secure their buildings.
“Most of the storm damage we get in Kansas is actually caused by straight-line winds, so they should always be taken very seriously,” Riley County Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey reportedly told WIBW 13. “Radar indicated a tornado debris signature and tight rotation in Olsburg in a storm which traveled south. We are very fortunate the rotation signature stopped before it reached Manhattan. The damage was significant but could have been worse with a direct tornado hit.”
Commercial property owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection to help fast-track insurance claims to cover the cost of roof wind damage.
A local high wind damage map shows a large gray storm cell running from Marysville south across Blue Rapids and Manhattan. The light areas indicate high winds able to snap tree limbs and tear shingles off rooftops. The darker gray regions concentrated over Blue Rapids and Manhattan demonstrate tornado-strength wind forces.

The National Weather Service tornado, hail, and high wind damage map for Saturday, June 11th shows intense, severe weather fronts focused on Eastern Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana, with isolated storms on the Eastern Seaboard. National reports accounted for 12 tornados, 55 hailstone strikes, and 79 high wind incidents. Traditional news and social media platforms point to Riley County and surrounding communities sustaining heavy property and roof wind damage.
- Blue Rapids: Winds topped 90 mph as roofs were torn off residential buildings in Marshall County. A tornado touched down southwest of the community, flipping over rail cars.
- Grandview Plaza: Winds upwards of 90 mph toppled trees and power lines across Geary County.
- Keats: Straight-line wind reportedly reached 82 mph. Utility poles were downed along Highway 24, and thousands lost power. Portions of roofs were ripped off by wind force.
- Manhattan: Excessive tree damage was reported at Tuttle Creek State Park. Significant damage to the Kappa Alpha Chapter building may have resulted from a nearby tornado.
- Marysville: Wind speeds surpassed 100 mph as commercial properties sustained heavy storm damage, and retail buildings suffered structural damage. Social media reports from the scene showed severely damaged agricultural buildings.
- Oketo: The National Weather Service confirmed a twister touched down in Marshall County, destroying structures in its path and inflicting roof wind damage to nearby buildings.
- Olsburg: Tree limbs 12 inches in diameter were snapped, and flying debris struck buildings. A funnel cloud cut an 11-mile path of destruction.
- Ogden: A large tree was uprooted, and branches were severed in the eastern parts of town.
- Waterville: Highway 77 was shut down west of Blue Rapids due to power lines strewn along the road.
When a twister passes through an area, it generates an intense vacuum effect that can compromise commercial roofing systems. It’s crucial to schedule a commercial roof inspection to prevent seepage and water damage. RestoreMasters recently sent emergency roof repair crews to repair hail and wind roof damage in Colby, KS, on June 4, 2022.
Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged. Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.
