A fast-moving hailstorm pelted McHenry, Maryland, and Northeast West Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 25th, leaving cracked shingles and roof leaks. Emergency roof repair crews were alerted to cure hail roof damage that could lead to water damage. RestoreMasters has certified professionals on standby at our roofing offices in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Fourteen Maryland counties and Baltimore city are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms will expand across the region Sunday afternoon,” according to The Patch. “Some storms may produce damaging winds and large hail. Ping pong ball size hail has already been reported in Garrett County.”

Commercial, agricultural, and institutional building decision-makers are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection. Hailstones the size of ping pong balls typically crack asphalt shingles, dent metal panels, and splinter tile roofing systems. Seemingly minor hail roof damage can result in unnoticed moisture penetrations, causing beams to rot and hazardous mold growths.

A commercial roof inspection helps document hail damage on roofs, which also includes compromised flashing and sealants around ventilation pipes and HVAC units. Commercial roof inspection services also support an insurance claim that might otherwise cause property owners to pay out of pocket.

A local hailstorm damage map shows a long front stretching from Morgantown, West Virginia, east across McHenry, Maryland, and as far as Route 135. The yellow areas over Morgantown, and Mount Nebo, W.V., as well as Hoyes Road, off of Highway 219 in Maryland, indicate ice chunks up to 1.25 inches peppered rooftops. The orange sections show that hailstones up to 1.75 inches in diameter pummeled automobiles and roofing systems.

The National Weather Service high wind, tornado, and hail damage map shows severe weather over Western Maryland and Northeast West Virginia. Other severe weather mapping shows significant storms over Virginia, Long Island New York, Wisconsin, Texas, and Louisiana.  All told, there were a reported 107 high wind reports, one tornado, and seven hailstorms on Sunday, Sept. 25th. Wide-reaching reports highlight the following hail damage to roofing systems and other property.

  • Bloomery: Two large trees were downed, blocking parts of Mission Road in Jefferson County.
  • Capon Bridge: High winds and strong gusts downed three mature trees in Hampshire County.
  • Martinsburg: Strong gusts of wind toppled trees along Giles Mill Road in Berkeley County.
  • McHenry: Areas of Garrett County were struck by hail the size of ping pong balls in the late evening.
  • Morgantown: The Monongalia County community sustained hits from ice the size of quarters.

High winds typically drive hail into rooftops, siding, and gutters. Having a commercial roof inspection conducted also accounts for other types of hail damage. RestoreMasters provided commercial roof inspection services in Bowie, MD, to document wind and tornado roof damage following a July 5, 2022, storm front.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) are covered with a durable shrink-wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place. That way you can prevent mold growth from water intrusion.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged. Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately. And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
