Hailstorms ripped across Mid-Michigan Wednesday, Sept. 21st, inflicting widespread damage and leaving property owners in need of a prompt commercial roof inspection. RestoreMasters dispatched emergency roof repair crews to impacted communities. Property owners and building managers concerned about hailstone strikes can contact the roof repair office in Detroit, Michigan.

“Hail could be up to ping pong size, wind gusts could hit 60 mph, and lightning is expected to be frequent as a cold front pushes into the area,” a Fox 2 report warned. “Around 10 a.m., the storm was just entering the severe thunderstorm watch area with clouds reaching up to 35-40,000 feet. The taller the clouds, the more that severe weather can build.”

Commercial, institutional, and agricultural building owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection. Hail typically dents and cracks materials that result in slow roof leaks and eventual water damage. Enlisting commercial roof inspection services following a hailstorm ensures a definitive record of the roof damage has been established to pursue an insurance claim.

A local hail damage map indicates a long storm front stretched from Standish to Route 115, west of Harrison. Smaller fronts impacted Edwards and areas around Roscommon State Forest Area, among others. The long yellow sections point to hail up to 1.25 inches blanketing areas. The orange concentrations on the map show that ice upwards of 1.75 inches in diameter caused property and hail roof damage.

The National Weather Service high wind and hailstorm map for Wednesday, Sept. 21st, confirms a fierce concentration of storms impacted Mid-Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Idaho, Pennsylvania, and New York State. A full accounting shows that 50 high wind events and 11 hailstone strikes occurred over 24 hours. Wide-reaching reports highlight the following effects across Mid-Michigan.

  • Breckenridge: Homes and businesses in Gratiot County were impacted by high winds and flying debris as downed trees blocked Lincoln Road East of Baldwin Road.
  • Gladwin: Gladwin County buildings were doused by ice the size of golf balls before sunset.

  • Harrison: Ping pong ball-sized ice peppered rooftops, cracking shingles and denting metal panels.

  • Standish: The Arenac County community sustained icefall the size of quarters at approximately 8 pm.
  • Mason: Businesses in the Ingham County Seat were pelted by hailstones the size of limes.

Prompt commercial roof inspection services are crucial in terms of documenting hail roof damage when filing a claim. RestoreMasters supported property owners by providing commercial roof inspection services after high winds damaged roofs in Saint Paul, MN, on August 27, 2022.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail.

Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph.

The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind.

In situations where you've got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Get your roof inspected, even if you think there is no problem, especially if your property falls anywhere within the area of the hail and wind damage map.

Some storm damage symptoms take time to appear.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
