Commercial Roofing Contractor Fixes Roof Hail Damage in Spokane County Washington & North Idaho After August 11, 2022 Storm
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Buildings in Eastern Washington and North Idaho were pummeled by large hail stones driven by strong wind gusts of up to 70mph during a rare storm on Thursday, August 11th. Urgent emergency roof repairs were needed to seal up building roof leaks, and commercial roof inspections are essential to fast-track insurance claims for roof hail and wind damage. RestoreMasters deployed roofing crews from offices that complete roof repair from Seattle, Washington and across the region.
“The storm ripped through places like Rockford, Liberty Lake, Otis Orchards, Hauser and Post Falls, said Ken Daniel, a meteorologist with Spokane’s National Weather Service,” reported the Spokesman-Review. “Hail stone around 1.75 inches in diameter in Otis Orchards and 1.5 inches in Liberty Lake were reported, Daniel said. Hail similar in size to the Otis Orchards pellets fell in Hauser, and residents experienced downed power lines and power outages around Rockford. Daniel said it seemed most of the damage was a result of the wind gusts and large hail, adding he would not be shocked if a flurry of insurance claims pop up in the coming days.”
Given the high instances of hail damage, commercial property owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection. Roof hail damage can dent metal roofing materials and puncture flat roofs and roof shingles with subtle damage not easily perceptible to the untrained eye. Tiny disruptions in roofing materials can allow rain to seep in and water damage to impact interior building materials and support structures. Given the amount of rainfall that accompanied the hailstorm that hit the Inland Northwest, undetected roof damage will lead to costly storm damage restoration unless corrected.
A hail damage map for the Spokane County storm stretches from Washington state areas south of Oaksdale through Fairfield, Rockford and north of Hauser, Idaho. The yellow sections show that hailstones up to 1.25 inches pelted automobiles and rooftops. The light orange section highlights ice stones up to 1.75 inches. But the dark orange swath indicates hail strikes as large as 2.5 inches in diameter pummeled roofs causing major roof hail damage in Liberty Lakes, Washington and areas west of Post Falls, Idaho.

Is hail this big normal for your area? Because for eastern Washington it's way, way bigger than what we generally get#hailstorm #climate #climatechange pic.twitter.com/STOLaG6zIF

The National Weather Service tornado, high wind, and hail damage map from August 11th shows multiple reports of hail and wind damage in Washington and Idaho. Reports include one tornado, 48 high wind reports, and 29 hail damage reports were recorded over 24 hours. News and social media reports show that Spokane and nearby counties, including Kootenai County suffered among the worst property and roof damage.
- Liberty Lake, WA: 2 inch hail was pictured on social media with additional reports of ping pong sized hail.
- Otis Orchards-East Farms, WA: Golf ball sized hail and wind gusts to 60mph reported ENE of town.
- Spokane Valley, WA: Damaging hail and high wind gusts.
- Rockford, WA: Downed power lines and power outages reported.
- State Line, ID: Large hail damaged trees, siding and landscaping and caused window damage.
- Hauser, ID: Golf ball sized hail reported on the south shore of Hauser Lake.
- Post Falls, ID: Reports of quarter size and larger hail dropping on buildings in McGuire area.
Heavy rains following the hailstorm damage to roofs and siding intensify long-term damage to buildings. Scheduling a commercial roof inspection can identify hard to see roof and building damage that might need storm damage repair.
Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems. Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
