May 29, 2022

Sunday Morning May 28th, Sioux Falls and Southeast South Dakota early risers were greeted by golf ball and softball-sized hailstones and a day of severe thunderstorms to go on into Memorial Day.

Dakota News Now reports an auto body shop that suddenly became very busy due to the damage to cars. Evan Kindt from Marv’s Body Shop said that the storm may be “the severest that we’ve seen in Sioux Falls since 2014”. Golf ball and softball-sized hail do not drop without causing damage to cars, buildings, and homes.

While Marv’s Body Shop worked diligently to assist their customers, RestoreMasters sent teams into the area to assist property owners. They will do the “dirty work” of cleanup, climbing, and walking roofs to mark and assess damage for insurance claims and implementing temporary emergency repairs until they are able to do final repairs.

The local hail and wind map indicate patches of hail from 1” up to 2.5”. There were various incidents of hail storms, the largest being the swath of hail from Olivet to areas out east beyond Adrian. The center of the storm directly over Sioux Falls and a patch west dropped huge hail about the size of golf balls and soft balls (dark orange). Extending beyond and meeting between those areas, ping-pong to golf ball-sized hail (orange) dropped, with the majority of the storm dropping 1” – 1.25” hail (yellow).

NOAA’s National Weather Service reports on storm events and damage in Sioux Falls and surrounding areas of South Dakota.

  • Tyndall: Nickel-sized hail up to Quarter-sized hail.
  • Willow Lake: Storage garage/shed destroyed.
  • Clark: 1” tree limbs broken, shingles blown off, storage building damaged, hay bailers tipped over, small branch damage.
  • Freeman: Nickel-sized hail to ping pong-ball-sized hail.
  • Bancroft: Metal outbuilding badly damaged from a strong wind gust causing it to collapse
  • Tea: Ping pong ball-sized hail.
  • Harrisburg: Quarter-sized hail, wind estimated at 60 – 70 mph, some vegetation damage.
  • Opal: 50 to 60 mph winds, pea-sized hail.
  • Sioux Falls: Quarter to Hen egg-sized hail.
  • Brandon: Damage to the roof at the local speedway.

Roofs become compromised when pelted with heavy hailstones, providing avenues for water damage in attic areas and crawl spaces and between walls, even more, when hail storms strike within weeks of each other. It was just a little under 4 weeks ago that this area was hit with similar-sized hail, during the storm on May 5, 2021. It is of utmost importance for property owners to have roofs covered temporarily to eliminate the possibility of further water damage.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail. Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph. Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) are covered with a durable shrink-wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place. That way you can prevent mold growth from water intrusion.
Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected. Some storm damage symptoms take time to appear. And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
