Emergency Roofing & Cleanup Underway in Wake of Tornado In Round Rock, TX, March 21, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
On Monday evening, March 21, 2022, Texas received an onslaught of tornadoes, heavy winds, and hail. Round Rock and surrounding communities were not immune to the effects. Crews from RestoreMasters were dispatched to the local area for the purpose of providing support in clean-up, emergency roof repair, and restoration for buildings damaged by heavy winds and the tornado that cut a wide path through Round Rock.
According to news reported by KXAN, the EF-2 tornado that tore through Round Rock and neighboring communities stayed on the ground for the longest time, of all the tornadoes in the storms that affected Texas that evening. It ran on the ground for 41 minutes at estimated peak winds of 135 mph. The path length was 29.29 miles, and the width was 500 yards. This tornado injured 16 people, with no fatalities.
Homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged. There was widespread roof damage, exterior walls removed, trees were snapped or uprooted, and thrown onto buildings, and vehicles were tossed about and dropped hundreds of feet away.
The tornado, indicated by the thick black line, began as an EF-0 in the Silverstone subdivision. It rapidly increased to an EF-1 and briefly peeked at EF-2, before finally ending in Granger, TX.
Widespread damage such as what the Round Rock-Granger tornado caused can be a challenge to assess, especially for those who are not fully knowledgeable of the unique damage caused by tornadoes and high winds. RestoreMasters is reminding business owners to be very cognizant of safety when assessing, cleaning up, and repairing damage after this storm. They have crews in the area who can provide expert advice, as well as help to accurately assess and safely clean up and restore the area.
National Weather Service damage reports provide information about the results of the high winds and tornado in Round Rock and surrounding areas:
- Williamson - Tornado damage at Kalahari Resort, nearby shopping centers, and homes, power poles and trees were knocked down or uprooted. Liberty Hill Plaza had thunderstorm damage to their sign. Tractor-trailer overturned at I-35 and US45. Damage to barns, houses and billboards along Hwy 29 east of Jonah. Chili's along Frontage road was damaged.
- Travis - Hail damage from quarter-size hail was reported near Bee Cave. Sixteen people were injured NW of Wells Branch to Bartlett.
- Bell - Power poles and trees were damaged on Alligator Road.
- Bastrop - Power lines were down near Elgin city limits.
Hail, high winds and especially tornadoes bring about a great deal of roof damage. And strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
