Emergency Contractors Dispatched Following Tornadoes and Hail In Arkansas, December 10, 2021
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Severe weather greatly impacted those throughout Arkansas on Friday, December 10, spawning several tornadoes and spewing damaging hail. To ensure our customers get the attention they need throughout the cleanup process, RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to areas with the heaviest amounts of damage.
Local communities experienced everything ranging from uprooted trees to downed power lines, destroyed buildings, and more. Several people were also injured. The system was part of a very large and very rare December storm that spanned through multiple states and killed several people.
All commercial property owners throughout Arkansas are encouraged to check buildings for damage. Hail as small as an inch in diameter can cause significant problems to roofing materials. Due to the scope and size of this storm, it is especially crucial to make repairs now before next spring. Failure to do so could lead to bigger issues in the future like water damage, flooding, mold, and more.
According to local hail maps, the hail damage didn’t have as much to do with the size of actual hailstones, but rather the widespread occurrence of it. From the edge of the Oklahoma state line through Hot Springs, Jonesboro, and to the northwest portion of Arkansas, residents experienced chunks measuring right around 1” to 1.25” in diameter (yellow). However, the heaviest area of concentration was northwest of Little Rock, which experienced multiple waves of hail in a very short period of time.
RestoreMasters remains committed to ensuring local property owners have the resources and assistance necessary to return to pre-storm conditions. With the large magnitude of this storm, we expect to have staff in the area for an extended period of time.
Based on National Weather Service data, there were reports of adverse weather in the Arkansas counties of:
- Woodruff — Multiple reports of a tornado near Tupelo and Augusta. Damaged trees, downed power lines, and three injured.
- Jackson — Several reports of a tornado near Weldon, Beedeville, and Overcup. Multiple downed trees snapped power lines, and more. Roof damage to an apartment complex in Diaz. One mobile home was completely destroyed.
- Poinsett — Confirmed as an EF-0 tornado. Trees were blown down across the highway in Weiner. Damage to homes and outbuildings in Fisher, Trumann, and Waldenburg.
- Craighead — Law enforcement reports of a tornado near Bay, Bono, and Monette. Snapped trees in Jonesboro. Brief tornado touchdown in Cash. Damage to a large rice facility in Greenfield.
Mississippi — Tornado touchdown reported by first responders in Leachville. Home completely destroyed near Keiser. Tons of damage to a barn in Hornersville. Power lines are down in Osceola and Luxora. Vehicle was blown off I-55 due to high winds.
Tornadoes and hail storms will cause severe damage, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
