Polk County, Missouri, residents huddled under tornado threat as Bolivar took heavy hail roof damage and flooding on Thursday, April 21, 2022. RestoreMasters notified commercial roof repair professionals in advance to support property owners immediately after the storms pass.

Area news crews reportedly interviewed Bolivar community members who endured raging winds and hard ice impacts. City of Bolivar Emergency Management Director Brent Watkins and property owners agreed the fast-moving storm left piles of ice and roof hail damage.

“It just started pattering, and then all the sudden, it just started, the wind started blowing really, really hard, and hail just started hitting the windows. I honestly thought that the windows were going to break,” one resident reportedly told KY3 news. “First instinct was to just take cover and get away from the windows and stay low because the last thing I need is being hit by hail. I’m not going to lie, it was quite scary. And seeing the wind and the hail, it was just, Wow.”

Media reports noted that a funnel cloud may have touched down west of Fair Play just over the Cedar County line. Early reports did not indicate any injuries or fatalities, but “property damage is abundant.” Officials have also reportedly stated that insurance companies are expected to cover the cost of residential and commercial roof repair.

A local hail damage map shows a massive storm stretch from Stockton Lake to the west of Conway, with smaller fronts hovering to the east and south of Stockton. Areas on the periphery of the hailstorm, shown in yellow, indicate hail up to 1.25 inches fell in Conway, Halfway, along Highway 65, and Bona, among others. The orange spaces show hail up to 2.5 inches able to crack shingles striking Bolivar, Boyd, Ekland, and Aldrich, among others.

Hail Map Bolivar, MO, April 21, 2022

Hail, high wind and suspected tornadic activity cause damage throughout the Bolivar Missouri area, storm reports by citizens and news centers hit social media.

The National Weather Service high wind and hailstorm map accounts for multiple severe weather events across Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa on Thursday, April 21. All told, one twister, eight high wind reports, and 29 hailstorms battered communities. The data points to the following cities and towns sustaining hail and roof wind damage.

  • Cedar County: Severe wind resulted in multiple buildings having portions of roofs torn.
  • Conway: The Laclede County area suffered high-velocity, quarter-sized hailstones that reportedly drove holes in roof panels.
  • Fair Play: Emergency management reports indicate the Polk County community was pounded by hard ice larger than a softball at approximately 4:45 pm. Reports of widespread roof storm damage are expected.
  • Jerico Springs: This Cedar County community also saw high-speed ice pelt residential and commercial properties. Coupled with strong gusts, windows and windshields were smashed.
  • Lockwood: Ice stones ranging from a quarter to half-dollar in diameter blanketed the area at 2 pm.
  • Milo: Hail the size of half-dollars pelted cars, trucks, and roofs between Sheldon and Milo during the mid-afternoon.
  • Nevada: Ice fell two miles south of the Vernon County town.

The largest hail to damage roofs in Missouri occurred in 2004 when ice six inches in diameter struck Meadville in Linn County. Free-falling ice just one inch and diameter can cause hail damage on roofs, and these types of storms typically continue through May. Residential and commercial property owners are urged to promptly schedule inspections, notify insurance companies, and affect roof leak repair. RestoreMasters recently responded to widespread roof damage in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Friday, April 15, 2022.

Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems. Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds. The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

Getting a roof inspection & property damage assessment after severe weather like this is important for determining whether you need to address roof damage from hail or high winds. If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
Get your roof inspected, even if you think there is no problem, especially if your property falls anywhere within the area of the hail and wind damage map. Symptoms of storm damage problems do not always show up immediately. And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
