Hail Damage Roof Repair Following September 14, 2021 Storms Around Great Bend, Kansas
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
A heavy storm system rolled into the Great Bend, Kansas area on Tuesday, September 14th, bringing large hail and high winds. Residents were left to assess the aftermath from the overnight storm after sunrise early the next morning, when they awoke to find damaged barns and disrupted crops. To help with the process, RestoreMasters has dispatched expert teams to the area.
Great Bend and Barton County are no strangers to poor weather this time of year. Back in April, the area saw 1.5” hailstones that caused a significant amount of damage to local businesses, farms, and outbuildings.
Looking at local weather report maps, the heaviest amounts of hail fell just north of Great Bend, with some chunks as large as 1.25” to 1.75” in diameter (dark orange). Other areas around St. John and Stafford saw moderate hail in the 1” to 1.25” range (yellow) to 1.25” to 1.75” range (orange). Other areas saw similar events, with some just experiencing hail around an inch in size that lasted for an extended period of time.
Hail should always be a major concern for commercial building owners. According to our experts at RestoreMasters, hail as small as an inch in diameter can cause significant damage to roofing materials, causing floods and other issues to occur. In response to this incident, our teams ask that property owners inspect carefully for potential issues.
With potential issues from previous incidents a concern, RestoreMasters plans to keep our teams within the local area to help with cleanup efforts for the foreseeable future. Should additional weather events occur, we’ll be ready to act quickly and effectively to help our customers located within in the region.
According to data from the National Weather Service archives, the storm produced large hailstones in the Kansas counties of:
- Edwards— Hailstones measuring 1.75” near Centerview and smaller 1.25” chunks near Lewis.
- Barton— Golf ball sized hail or larger near the Great Bend town limits, with additional high winds near Hoisington.
- Hamilton— Residents reported hail in the 1.25” range falling for five to ten minutes. It completely covered the ground.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
