Hail Damage Roof Repair for Waco & Temple, TX Area Following April 8, 2021 Hail Storm
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

RestoreMasters emergency roofing and repair teams have been assisting property owners with emergency roof repairs and property damage assessments in north Texas through several rounds of severe storms this spring. The latest batch of severe weather dropped damaging hail over Waco, Temple, Hearn, Bryan, and College Station communities on Thursday, April 8th.
This storm kicked up in Comanche county in the afternoon, quickly gaining strength and producing large hail. The storm split into two cells over Erath county around 5:30 pm as it moved East. The weaker cell moved toward Dallas but died out before reaching the city. The stronger of the two moved south towards Waco and continued to strengthen and produce damaging hail.
The storm moved to impact Burleson, Brazos, and Grimes counties, and the most significant hail was seen in the Bryan-College Station area around 9 pm, with the National Weather Service reporting hail from quarter to baseball size. The storm moved into Montgomery county before finally dissipating later in the evening.
Here are a few examples of hail damage we uncovered in the area. While it's hard to see damage to the roof from a distance, our roof inspection uncovered significant hail damage, including hail strikes of 1.75" or larger on this TPO membrane roof.
Wind was also a factor in the damage from this storm, citizens and spotters reported damaged property, downed trees, and snapped telephone poles in Mclennan, Bell, and Brazos counties. Strong winds will increase the velocity of falling hail, exacerbating potential damage. Hail 2-4” in diameter as seen in these storms can reach speeds as fast as 70mph and cause serious property and roof damage. Hail damage can be especially hard to detect on roofing materials like metal, TPO, EPDM or even shingles, and may go unnoticed while slow roof leaks occur, or mold starts growing in your building.
Local hail maps indicate that the largest hail from this storm was concentrated over Bryan and College Station, with hailstones 2.5” or larger indicated in purple. There were also several spots that saw 2” hailstones (red), including Temple, Waco, and Turnersville. 1-1.5” (orange and yellow) stretched from the outskirts of Gatesville, down past College Station.
Texas communities affected by this round of storms according to the National Weather Service:
- Hamilton – Reports from Hico of hail over 2” in diameter
- Bosque – Cranfills Gap saw quarter seized hailstones
- Mclennan – McGregor, Hewitt, Lorena, and Moody all saw hail, with spotters reporting hail up to golf ball size
- Bell – 1.5” hail reported in Troy
- Falls – Egg sized hail reported near Rosebud and Troy
- Brazos – Reports flooded in from the Bryan-College Station area of hailstones the size of baseballs: over 2.75” in diameter
- Henderson – Quarter sized hail reported from Malakoff and Gun Barrel City
Hail as small as 1” can damage structures, and hail damage can be especially hard to detect on roofing materials like metal, TPO, EPDM or even shingles.
In addition to hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a detailed roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
