Hail Damage Roof Repair for West Texas Following May 16 & 17, 2021 Hail Storms
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
2021 spring storms are wreaking havoc in West Texas, as the are keeps getting hit by storms bringing strong winds and damaging hail. Now the area has to deal with damage from back-to-back hailstorms Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th. RestoreMasters has been on the ground in West Texas since the first rounds of storms earlier this year and is ready to assist property owners immediately with emergency roof repairs and property damage assessments.
This latest round of storms started up Sunday with reports of hail, tornados, and high-speed wind gusts from all over the West Texas area. The hardest hit communities included Snyder in Scurry county, where residents saw golf ball to baseball sized hail and significant property damage. Locals shared jaw dropping pictures on social media of the gigantic hailstones, broken windows, and tree damage. The largest hailstone reported measured at 4.25” in diameter. In rare cases where hail 4+ inches is produced and combined with high winds, the velocity of these hailstones can reach an extremely dangerous 100mph. Colorado City in Mitchell county also saw incredible baseball sized hail, and Petersburg, just north of Lubbock, saw hail 2.5-3” in diameter. Amarillo also had numerous reports of hailstones ranging from 1”-2”.
Here are a few examples of hail damage. While it’s hard to see damage to the roof from a distance, our roof inspection uncovered significant hail damage, including hail strikes of 1.75″ or larger on this TPO membrane roof.
On Monday the 17th, things only got worse. A tornado touched down just west of Lubbock, where residents also saw hail for the second day in a row. Locals and trained spotters reported hail ranging from 1” to almost 3” in diameter. Colorado City also saw hail again, this time the largest stones measures at about 2” across. The Big Spring and Sterling City areas saw some of the largest hail and most intense weather this time around. A large tornado touched down north of Sterling City and damaged a gas plant along highway 163. Hailstones up to 2.75” were reported from several locations in Sterling county.
Hailstones just 1” in diameter can cause structural damage to roofing systems that can go unnoticed for months (or even years) until it’s too late to file a claim or a leak starts to form in your roof. The RestoreMasters Emergency Repair teams expect to see significant damage from these storms, especially since these are not the first or the last hailstorms to affect these areas in Spring 2021.
Hail as small as 1” can damage structures, and hail damage can be especially hard to detect on roofing materials like metal, TPO, EPDM or even shingles.
In addition to hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a detailed roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
