Hail Storm Causes Roof Damage in Denver, CO on June 13, 2021
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Severely damaging storms impacted the Denver, Colorado area on Sunday, June 13th, causing major hail to fall primarily in the City of Aurora. To help property owners in this populated area, RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to the area, as we had already been working a hail storm in Colorado Springs from May. Currently, we’re assisting with tasks such as inspections, emergency roof repairs, and other mitigation tasks associated with hail damage.
The vast majority of the chunks of hail were moderate in size, but large enough to break windows, dent cars, and create problems for roof shingles.
Of course, the late night timing of the storm did work out in favor for a few lucky individuals who were at home and kept vehicles garaged or under cover. However, that also means there were some who did not have time to prepare for the inclement weather, such as those camping in Cherry Hills State Park or those on the way home from weekend activities.
Due to the large number of commercial buildings, shopping centers, schools, and hotels in the area, RestoreMasters is encouraging all commercial property owners to thoroughly inspect buildings for damage from this event. We plan on keeping our teams in the region for a few weeks to help our customers repair any associated hail or wind damage from this incident.
According to local hail maps, the storm was primarily hailstones from 1” to 1.25” (yellow) with some neighborhoods seeing 1.25” to 1.75” (orange).
Hail as small as an inch in diameter can greatly damage buildings, cars, and more. Thus, it is important to ensure even hidden issues are handled swiftly to prevent bigger issues -- like flooding or leaks -- during future storms.
Based on National Weather Service records, most of the hail was centered around the Aurora area. However, the storms did impact various neighborhoods in the counties of:
- Denver – Hailstones measuring 1” in diameter near Englewood, Cherry Hills, Cherry Creek Reserve, and Aurora.
- Arapahoe – Quarter sized to ping pong sized hail in Aurora. Reported damage to vehicles and minor flooding at Cherry Hill State Park.
- Adams – Half dollar sized chunks of hail in Aurora.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
