Hail Storm Causes Roof Damage in Maryland Heights, St. Louis Area on July 9, 2021
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
A highly damaging storm passed through St. Louis, Missouri on Friday, July 9th, dropping moderate hail and high, gusty winds over the area. RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to the metropolitan area to assist commercial property owners with mitigation tasks like hail damage inspections and emergency roofing repairs. Part of a widespread system that affected parts of the country with hail in Iowa and in Nebraska, both hail and wind were significant during this weather event, causing widespread issues throughout the region.
The vast majority of the reported damage comes from wind gusts in upwards of 70 MPH, but hailstones as large as 2” also fell near areas like Maryland Heights and Brentwood, causing destruction. The worst of the hail was centered south of Maryland Heights and west of University City. However, most of the region saw at least some rainfall and wind from the storm.
Local hail maps indicate chunks as large as 1.75” (orange) and many areas over 1” or larger (yellow). As visible on the graphic, the hail was fairly concentrated within a specific portion of the area. However, St. Louis property owners experienced wind all over the county, causing significant damage.
As a commercial property owner, it is important to understand that any event that includes both high winds and hail can cause significant roofing damage. RestoreMasters is committed to helping commercial property owners in the area with all associated cleanup tasks and plan to remain in the area for an extended period of time. Thus far, we’ve assisted multiple businesses with a variety of cleanup tasks including temporary repairs, damage cleanup, water damage mitigation, and more.
According to National Weather Service records, the most notable events related to this storm all happened within St. Louis County and most were associated with wind damage. They include:
- St. Louis – Both official and social media reports of hailstones measuring 2” near Maryland Heights. Half-dollar to golf ball-sized hail in Creve Coeur. A steel highway sign was blown down near I-64 and Boones Crossing. Multiple large trees, massive limbs, and powerlines down throughout the entire area. 70 MPH winds at the St. Louis Lambert International Airport. And the steeple on the Centenary United Methodist Church partially collapsed due to wind gusts.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
