Damaging storms with catastrophic winds and moderate hail made their way through the Fredericksburg, VA region on Thursday, July 29th. Local residents experienced numerous downed trees, large hailstones, and severe straight line winds. RestoreMasters has teams on the ground to assist with cleanup tasks and emergency roof repairs.

From all accounts, high winds were the biggest factor in this storm. However, that does not mean there wasn’t a fair amount of large hail, which can easily damage a commercial roof. According to weather maps, the worst of the damage happened north of Fredericksburg near Wallaces Corner, where 1.75” or larger hail was possible (orange). Most areas, however, saw hail in the 1-1.75″ diameter range (yellow & light orange).

Storms with this level of wind and hail damage can be absolutely devastating to commercial property owners. While hail over 1” is enough to damage shingles, the main concern with this particular weather event is the extreme wind and falling debris. Multiple large trees were uprooted in the area, making it plausible that most retail and industrial spaces saw some sort of damage. Thus, it is recommended that all local property owners have a roof inspection to ensure there’s no lasting damage.

Fredericksburg, VA Hail Map 7/29/21

Our experts at RestoreMasters plan on remaining in the Fredericksburg region until we’ve helped all of our customers return to pre-storm conditions. We estimate this process to take several weeks.

According to reports from the National Weather Service, this was a moderate hail event with catastrophic straight line winds. Counties that saw the most damage include:

  • Spotsylvania – Multiple trees blown down due to gusty winds.
  • City of Frederick – Trees in upwards of a foot in diameter blown down during the storm event.
  • Stafford – Numerous reports of quarter size or larger hail in the Falmouth area, including chunks up to 2.25”. Large numbers of uprooted trees in the area, including those at the Gauntlet Golf Club and some blocking the I-95 onramp.
  • Caroline – Lots of reports of wind damage in the area including roofs ripped off houses, RVs knocked over, and many fallen trees.

In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
