Roof Repairs After Hail Storms Pounds Miami-Dade, Fl Area, Roof Damage, April 3, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
On the evening of Sunday, April 3, 2022, the Miami-Dade area was hit with a thunderstorm and damaging hail. RestoreMasters sent crews throughout the county to help provide support with emergency roof repair and restoration for buildings damaged by hail.
Hail is formed when a thunderstorm updraft lifts water droplets to where temperatures are freezing in the atmosphere. The droplets freeze, get heavier and drop through the storm cloud, collecting more water, and the updraft pushes it back up into the freezing atmosphere again. Eventually, the stone becomes too heavy for the updraft to move, so it drops to the ground.
Hail sizes are identified by relating them to items that are familiar to us. For example, 1/4-inch hail is pea size, 3/4-inch hail is penny size, and 1.5-inch hail is ping pong ball size. The largest common hail size is grapefruit, at 4.5 inches. The largest hailstone ever recorded was 8 inches, weighing almost 2 lbs.
There were unofficial reports of ping pong ball size hail throughout the Miami-Dade area. According to Miami Herald, it is not common to get hail in the area, because it melts in the air before it reaches the ground.
The yellow area on the map indicates hail up to 1.25-inch. It brought damage to homes and businesses in Kendall and surrounding communities.
Hail storms can create a lot of roof and siding damage. It takes an experienced eye to detect. RestoreMasters provides a visual guide, for assisting building owners and homeowners in identifying and assessing damage after a hail storm. RestoreMasters wants business owners and homeowners to know that they have crews in the Miami-Dade area who have many years of experience in the area of identifying and repairing damage caused by hail.
National Weather Service indicates confirmed reports of hail in Miami-Dade county.
- Miami-Dade - Quarter-size hail on 154th Terrace South of TMB in Country Walk, near 122nd at 106th in West Kendall, between Kendale Lakes and sunset, and near the Baptist Hospital in Kendall.
Hail and high wind gusts from thunderstorms can cause a lot of roof and siding damage. Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
