Hail & Wind Storms Cause Roof Damage in Moline & Quad Cities August 11, 2021

A round of severe storms went through Moline, Illinois and the Quad Cities on Wednesday, August 11, dropping moderate hail and bringing heavy winds. To help residents with damage removal tasks like emergency roof repairs, RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to the area.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm brought small hail, lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and wind gusts of up to 50 MPH.

The biggest issue with this weather system was the numerous uprooted trees and broken branches that it caused. The resulting damage included thousands of local residents losing power due to snapped poles and utility lines. These individuals were left without power for most of the day as crews diligently worked to repair lines and inspect damage to poles.

RestoreMasters aims to remind customers that even hail as small as an inch in diameter can destroy the roof of a commercial building. Though the duration of this weather event was short and the hail sizes minimal, we're encouraging everyone to get a professional inspection to ensure there are no further issues before another round hits the area. Furthermore, we fully intend to keep teams local in order to ensure the restoration and build back processes are fully handled.

Surprisingly, the only hail large enough to be recorded by the National Weather Service was near Rock Island, Illinois. Looking at local weather maps, it is easy to see that the community experienced hail sizes between 1” and 1.25” (yellow). While that might not seem significant, it is more than enough to cause serious damage to local buildings.

However, additional reports of other storm-related damage in the area are still worth noting, including incidents in the counties of:

  • Rock Island — Hailstones measuring around 1”.
  • Whiteside — Wind gusts knocked down a large tree branch almost 18” in diameter.
  • Bureau — Large uprooted and downed trees. Destroyed pole barn near the town of Ohio. Another tree fell on a home in La Moille, causing water to leak inside.
  • La Salle — As the storm continued out of the Quad Cities area, it caused an 80 MPH wind gust near Earlville, creating a significant amount of damage.

In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
