A volatile complex of tornados ripped through much of central Texas on March 21st, resulting in the death of one individual and injuring more than 20 others. New Braunfels didn’t escape the storm system, which wreaked hail damage to multiple areas of the city.

The town avoided tornado damage, but hail damaged much of Comal County. Hail rained down 1-inch (indicated in yellow on the map) to 2-inch stones on the city. The town of Schertz incurred damage from 1-inch hail, while hail measuring 1.25” to 2” battered the town of New Braunfels, indicated on the weather map as 2-inch hail (red-orange).

In other nearby areas, 1-inch hail dropped on Cibolo in Comal County and continued to affect towns and cities from San Antonio to the north of Lockhart.

Responding quickly, RestoreMasters traveled to Comal County to help New Braunfels, Schertz, and Cibolo property owners assess roof repair needs and property damage, and effect tornado damage restoration.

Wind Hail Storm Map New Braunfels Texas - March 21, 2022

Hail of just 1-inch in size can inflict damage to an asphalt roof, a common roofing type used in Texas. This means roofs in New Braunfels likely sustained significant damage. A perimeter check of the structure by the property owner can uncover obvious damage, but from the ground, it is easy to miss damage on an EPDM, metal, or TPO roof.

According to StormerSite, this storm event resulted in six hail reports. Although Comal County avoided tornadoes and high wind damage, many areas of Texas did not fare so well. Palo Pinto County, Jack, Montague, Wise, Love, Cooke, Tarrant, Williamson, Bell, Grayson, and Denton all were hit hard by tornadoes, damaging roofs and destroying some homes, businesses, and mobile homes.

The National Weather Service reported that tornados and hail from this round of storms also affected several other Texas counties, including:

  • Guadalupe - EF-2 tornado caused damage along a 7.5 mile track, near Kingsbury and Fentress, report of 1.25-inch hail north of Seguin, home and tree damage reported between Kingsbury and Luling, Randolph AFB auxiliary field reported wind gusts of 64 mph.
  • Caldwell - Tornado reported north of I-10 and northwest of Luling, damage to a home at the intersection of Hwy 80 and FM 671.
  • Blanco - Quarter-size hail reported.
  • Wilson - Half-dollar size hail in Poth.
  • Bexar - Quarter-size hail reported.

Storm damage to roofs, and siding both commercial and residential requires help from knowledgeable people trained in identifying and remediating damage. as well as assisting with insurance claims. Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
