North Texas was pummeled by multiple incidents of extremely high wind and tornadoes in various locations, on Monday evening, March 21, 2022. RestoreMasters sent teams to the local area to provide clean-up, emergency roof repair, and restoration for property owners.

In Watauga, Dallas Morning News reported that the roof of Hardeman Elementary School was destroyed, letting water into the classrooms below. Near Watauga, another roof was ripped off of part of an apartment building, and very strong straight-line winds damaged an apartment building in Carrollton. Thankfully, no one was injured.

In Tarrant county a brief tornado damaged a marina on Lake Benbrook and then caused widespread tree damage throughout a neighborhood southwest of Jacksboro. There was hail up to 1-inch in size in various locations near Watauga.

The weather map below indicates a concentration of very high winds northeast of Watauga. A brief tornado touched down in Euless and traveled northeast near DFW airport, which peaked at 85 miles per hour (EF-0). In total, the National Weather Service confirmed 16 tornadoes across the region ranging from Bell County to the south and extending all the way up to the Texas-Oklahoma border.

RestoreMasters likes to remind commercial and residential property owners to take extra care while doing inspections due to debris and structural instability. Spotting roof damage from hail can be challenging. RestoreMasters provides a handy guide to help safely inspect your roof for hail damage. Sometimes the damage is not obvious to the untrained eye, so RestoreMasters has crews in the area to assist with inspections, clean-up, and restoration.

National Weather Service reported damage from high winds and a brief tornado in surrounding counties:

  • Tarrant - The roof of Hardeman Elementary School was destroyed in Watauga.
  • Johnson -  Trees and power lines were downed along Highway 22. Many homes were damaged near Emet, and major house damage was reported at Rock Creek Hill and Luffy Chapel Roads.
  • Parker - Millsap Fire Department reported damage to a structure north of town.
  • Cooke - A tornado developed shortly after entering the county, multiple barns and outbuildings were damaged, also there was property damage and a confirmed barn fire.

Many times hail accompanies high winds and tornadoes, which can result in various degrees of roof damage. And strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
