Powerful Hail Storm on July 27, 2021 Causes Roof Damage Near LaCrosse, WI
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
A fast-moving storm passed through La Crosse, Wisconsin in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 27th, bringing high winds and moderate hail. To help commercial property owners sort out the damage, RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to the local area. While some wind issues were reported, the biggest threat was isolated hail.
The area surrounding La Crosse saw hail ranging from quarter size to as big as 2.75” in nearby North Bend. To put this into perspective, hailstones as small as an inch can cause significant damage to roof shingles. Thus, all property owners are encouraged to check buildings for hail issues including loose materials, holes, and even decking problems. Failure to act now can create additional damage during future summer storms.
According to local weather maps, the heaviest hit areas saw hail in the 2.75” or larger category (purple). Other parts of the included counties experienced chunks in the 1.25” to 1.75” range (orange) and the 1.75” to 2.5” range (dark orange). However, the vast majority of communities that experienced significant hail were in the 1” to 1.25” mark (yellow).
Significant flooding was also reported by local weather stations. Due to the intensity of this weather event, RestoreMasters will remain in the area to assist business property owners with cleanup efforts like hail damage inspections, emergency roof repairs, water damage mitigation, and other repairs. We intend to stay until all of our customers are taken care of and their buildings returned to pre-storm conditions.
This was an early morning storm that caught many local residents by surprise. National Weather Service records indicate damaging hail in multiple Wisconsin counties, including:
- La Crosse – Quarter sized hail throughout the region and beyond.
- Clark – Localized hail measuring around 1” in diameter throughout the county and in Granton.
- Vernon – One inch chunks of hail near Stoddard.
- Monroe – 60 MPH winds near Cataract. Uprooted and damaged trees along State Highway 27.
- Trempealeau – Reports from North Bend residents on social media show tennis to baseball sized hail chunks. This equates to somewhere around 2.75” in diameter.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
