Historic Tile Roofing

Project Overview
Summary provided by video transcript.
Do you have a historic clay tile? Do you potentially already have leaks to your roof system? Has there been a storm that has affected your area? Who do you call for proper roof inspection?
The structure behind me was built in the 1800s. It has the original historic clay tile roofing system. Since the early nineties, they’ve struggled with leaks and having to do repairs every couple of years. Management at this point has noticed that the price or cost of trying to deal with these repairs of these issues ongoing, has become more and more expensive. And they don’t know what to do at this point. Luckily for them, they’ve been hit by a hail storm. When a baked clay tile is manufactured, it has a finish to it. When hail impacts that, it disrupts that finish and potentially chips the tile, allowing water to saturate or be absorbed into the tile. During the winter months that saturated water freezes and thaws and creates what’s called spawning, where it gets worse and worse. Just like a pothole in the road, it continues to degrade that particular tile. Ultimately leading to failure of the entire roof system. We’re here today doing temporary repair while we settle the insurance carrier claim and waiting for the manufacturer to make the tile.
Now that we’ve got temporary repairs done, once we get the insurance settlement taken care of, then we’ve got to move on to the project and actually build this thing. At that point, we’re going to have to have 48 guys out here, 3 coppersmiths. We’re going to have scaffolding that’s going to go all the way around this building. We’re going to have boom lifts, forklifts. We have to get scaffolding to go all the way up to the top of the turrets. In addition to, we’ve got to have land space or staging area so that all these materials can go back on the project. It’s quite extensive. It does take some time to do. This project is going to be restored to its full potential and beauty. On this particular project, we’re going to go back with a historical tile. They’ve been around in America since 1888. Most of these projects that you’ll find have tiles that are over a hundred years old manufactured by this manufacturer.
They still hand make them and bake them to 2100 degrees, making them five times more impact resistant and stronger than your highest grade one tile, giving them a 75 year manufacturer warranty. In addition to going back with new tile with the old world traditions, new copper, new underlayment, they just don’t make them like they used to. So if you have a historic clay tile roofing system, whether you’ve had a storm in your area or not, please feel free to reach out to us. We’d love to do a complimentary inspection, give you any maintenance tips necessary, or do any repairs for you.
