Repair Contractor Team Dispatched To Assist With Clean-up After Hail and Torrential Rain Damage In Wichita & Central Kansas on May 31, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Throughout Tuesday night, May 31st, the residents of Wichita & Central Kansas heard tornado warnings, there were a few that touched down in areas, but did not cause any significant damage. What did develop were torrential rains, flooding, and softball size hail stones.
Hail up to 2” – 3” in diameter (golf ball size to softball size) fell, damaging homes and commercial buildings. Property owners were left not only with cracked, broken, dented roof tiles, siding, and gutters, but also water damage due to the wind-driven heavy rains. This kind of damage can cause mold, mildew, and degradation of wood within the structures of buildings.
By late Tuesday night, there were reports of 2” to 4” of rain. It fell so hard that the storm drains could not handle the flow and local flooding occurred. At 10 pm, there were stalled vehicles stranded in street flooding and up to 2000 without power.
RestoreMasters knows that it is imperative for immediate emergency intervention, as soon as possible after a storm such as this. A team was sent to aid property owners with clean-up, and emergency roof covering with tarp or shrink wrap, in order to prevent further water damage from future rain storms.
The Wichita, KS area as indicated on the local hail map, had patches of varied sizes of hail, from softball-sized (purple) to golf ball-sized (orange). One inch (yellow) to one and three-quarter-inch sized (orange) hail dropped in patches at varied times throughout the storm.

According to NOAA National Weather Service Hail Map, varied-sized hail pelted Wichita and surrounding areas.
- Wichita: brief tornadoes touched down, very large hail.
- Dexter: storm tracker saw a brief spin-up that lasted for a few seconds, touchdown in open field.
- Winfield: Golf ball-sized hail.
- Emporia: Quarter-sized hail.
- Belle Plaine: Tennis ball-sized hail.
RestoreMasters has been working to mitigate the damage caused by heavy rains and exacerbated by damage from large hail. When water seeps into buildings through roof shingle damage or siding damage, warmth from outside or from heating inside will encourage the growth of mold. As moisture increases, so does mold growth. When conditions are right, mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours, it actually shows itself up to about 12 days from start. Steps can be taken to deal with mold damage, and RestoreMasters provides a guide for this. They are also available to assist property owners in every aspect of clean-up to full restoration.
Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems.
Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph.
The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.
If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
