Disaster Response Team

Aug 10, 2021

Another round of storms producing wind and hail passed through Hays, Kansas on Saturday, August 7th. In response to potential damage to buildings in the area, RestoreMasters continues to keep expert teams in the area to assist with cleanup. In fact, we’ve continued to have personnel helping customers in the region since the big hail storm that stretched from Ellis to McPherson on May 26.

According to reports, the vast majority of falling hail occurred over the town of Ellis and Hays-Munjor Regional Airport. Damage is unknown at this time, but we can tell that local meteorologists have measured the hailstones at 1” to 1.25” in diameter based on the local weather map (yellow).

Wind was also significant during this storm. In Victoria, residents experienced 71 MPH wind gusts that knocked down power lines and uprooted trees. In Saline County, winds reached as high as 61 MPH, breaking power poles and lines.

Hays, KS Hail Map 8/7/21
Hail as small as an inch in diameter can cause significant damage to roofing materials, such as shingles and decking. In conjunction with other serious storm systems this year, we advise all commercial building owners to thoroughly inspect their properties for damage after this latest round. RestoreMasters has helped several businesses in the area this summer and will continue to do so as long as these serious weather events continue to occur.

It is important to note that this was just one of several storms that hit various regions in Kansas on the same day. While the path of the storm was relatively limited, plenty of damage was done. According to the National Weather Service, hail or damaging winds were reported in the Kansas Counties of:

  • Ellis – 71 MPH wind gusts. Tree limbs broken and roof shingles missing from buildings in Victoria. Power lines down in Hays.
  • Ellsworth – 63 MPH wind gusts. Multiple trees down in Ellsworth.
  • Saline – Wind gusts reaching 64 MPH at Salina Municipal Airport. Broken power poles and snapped tree trunks.
  • Decatur – Strong winds of 50 to 60 MPH. Residents reported small hen egg size hail that completely covered the ground.

In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
