Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Property owners in Davenport, Florida, received a second helping of roof damage on Sunday, May 15th, as another rare hailstorm struck in less than one month.
The Davenport, FL area sustained five incidents of hail making ground fall over the last 12 months, based on reports by trained spotters. Doppler Radar indicates ice storms passed through the Polk County community 33 times with a pair of hailstone poundings in the last year, according to tracking reports. The previous ice strike occurred on April 17, 2022, when hailstorms pummeled much of Central Florida, including Davenport.
“A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for North Central Polk County Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service. NWS said residents in the area can expect wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail,” News Channel 8 warned Sunday, May 15th, as the storm approached. “The weather service added that strong winds and hail can cause damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees. The warning is in effect until Sunday at 8:15 p.m. Residents in Davenport and Loughman are expected to receive the worst of the storm.”
A local hail damage map stretching from the eastern side of Route 27 to the Poinciana Parkway southwest of Intercession City shows a large front. The expansive yellow area indicates ice up to 1.25 inches in diameter impacted neighborhoods and business districts. Light orange patches highlight places that experienced ice up to 1.75 inches. Dark orange points to ice stones as large as tennis balls, causing hail damage to roofing systems.

High winds and hailstones cause damage throughout the area, and storm reports by citizens cover social media:

Friend sent me video of hail she got a bit after 5pm, located NW of Newberry, FL about halfway to High Springs. Was a little pop up storm, she said it was bright and sunny right before it started (typical Florida lol) #FLwx @NWSJacksonville pic.twitter.com/irHaAtrGYZ

The National Weather Service tornado, high wind, and hailstorm damage map shows massive storm clusters over Arkansas, East Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Mississippi, and Missouri on May 15, 2022. But isolated hailstorms can be seen impacting Polk, Escambia, Santa Rosa, and St. Johns counties in Florida. The national reporting service tallied two tornados, 188 high wind incidents, and 151 hailstorms, with the following Polk County areas needing emergency roof repair.
- Davenport: Hen Egg-sized hail struck the outskirts to the south, west, and north of the city.
- Intercession City: Hail the size of quarters pelted buildings as severe wind gusts exceeded 60 mph. Wind roof damage as well as torn siding and fractured trees were expected in early reporting.
- Loughman: Hailstones the size of limes struck commercial buildings along Ronald Reagan Parkway.
As Central Florida enters the rainy season, commercial property owners are urged to schedule roof damage inspections to prevent leaks and unnecessary losses. RestoreMasters provided hail damage roof repair in the aftermath of ice and windstorms in Augusta, Georgia, on May 6, 2022.
Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
