Roof Damage Repairs Follow Hail Storms in Lufkin, Texas, March 14, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Strong storms blasted through Lufkin, Texas, and the surrounding areas on Monday, March 14, dropping hail as big as 1.75 inches in diameter in certain spots and damaging many residential and commercial properties.
Following the storms, RestoreMaster mobilized to perform emergency roof repairs and assess other damage on various properties throughout the area. RestoreMaster remains in the area to assist more property owners with damage assessments in the coming days and weeks.
Storm maps indicate a long band (orange) of hail from northeast of Trinity through Lufkin and up to San Augustine. The biggest hail fell within this band, ranging from 1.25 inches in diameter up to 1.75 inches in diameter. Hail of 1 inch in diameter (yellow) and greater fell in other nearby communities, notably near the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and to the north of Trinity.

One-inch hail is more than enough to cause roof damage, and because many property owners do not notice damage immediately after a storm such as this, it may be up to several weeks before they realize there's a problem. It underscores the importance of regularly inspecting roofs, especially after a strong storm system moves through the area, so that small problems are caught and fixed before they can become much larger ones. RestoreMaster is here to help perform roof inspections and remains in the area to assist property owners with storm damage.
Strong storms delivering heavy wind and hail also moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Monday, March 14. RestoreMaster has teams in this area of the state also, responding to property damage.
The National Weather Service reported hail impact from this strong storm system in several other counties in east Texas, including:
- Angelina - Hail up to 1.75 inches was reported, notably in a 10-mile radius around the Lufkin city center in the heart of the county. Multiple instances of property damage were reported in the area.
- San Augustine - Golf ball-sized hail was reported along the storm band into San Augustine county.
- Trinity - Trinity County experienced hail ranging from 1.25 inches in diameter to 1.75 inches. Roof damage from the storm was reported at an Apple Springs business.
- Rusk - Further north in Rusk County, quarter-sized to half dollar-sized hail fell throughout the area.
Hail storms can wreak havoc on roofing systems and siding, and often times strong wind gusts accompany hail storms. Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
