Roof Hail Damage Repair Across Southwest Iowa Following September 17, 2022 Storm
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Massive hailstones smashed windshields and damaged rooftops across Southwest Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 17th, leaving commercial and agricultural building owners in dire need of emergency roof repair. RestoreMasters sent field crews to impacted communities and property owners can contact the roof repair office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a commercial roof inspection or repair team.
“The National Weather Service reports hail ranging from as small as pea- to as large as baseball ball size, fell across the area. Storms also brought winds of up to 70 miles per hour. The evening began at around 5:30-p.m. with a severe thunderstorm watch issued for the far west and southwest counties,” KJAN reported. “The warnings began to pop up about two hours later, including a tornado warning that was issued for southeast Montgomery and NE Page Counties. A possible tornado was indicated by radar, but there were no confirmed sightings.”
Enlisting commercial roof inspection services following a severe weather event can prevent unnecessary water damage to buildings. That’s why RestoreMasters urges businesses across Southwest Iowa to request a complimentary roof inspection.
A local hailstorm damage map shows multiple storm fronts trekking across Southwest Iowa. The yellow areas indicate hail up to 1.25 inches pelting communities. The light orange points to ice chunks up to 1.75 inches, damaging roof shingles and denting metal panels. But the dark orange and purple concentrations prove rocks of ice up to 3.5 inches in diameter inflicted significant hail roof damage.

The National Weather Service high wind and hail damage map confirms a multi-pronged storm front devastated Iowa, as well as parts of Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota. A full accounting for Saturday, Sept. 17th, includes 28 high wind reports and 72 hailstone strikes. Boots on the ground reporting reveals the following hail property damage across Southwest Iowa counties.
- Adams County: Corning was blanketed by quarter-sized hail and Carbon saw larger ice chunks hit buildings.
- Cass County: The town of Griswold sustained ice fall along Route 92 the size of golf balls.
- Montgomery County: Reports coming out of Grant indicate ice the size of quarters peppered the community. Elliot took hits from ice nearly 2 inches in diameter. Stanton felt the brunt of the county-wide event as hailstones the size of tennis balls shattered windshields and badly damaged roofs.
- Pottawattamie County: The border county suffered among the worst hail roof damage with ice the size of large apples pounding commercial and agricultural buildings in Carson. Oakland and Council Bluffs took hits from golf ball-sized hail. Extreme winds able to tear off roof panels exceeded 70 mph in Hancock.
- Lucas County: Businesses in Lucas and Chariton experienced roof damage as ice stones the size of ping pong balls struck in the evening.
- Mills County: Hail the size of ping pong balls pelted communities such as Mineola around dusk.
- Union County: Trained spotters discovered 1-inch ice pellets in Cromwell. The County Seat (Creston) took substantial damage as hail the size of golf balls cracked windshields and roof shingles.
Although tornado warnings were in effect during the devastating ice and high wind storms, spotters and meteorologists could not confirm a twister touched down. RestoreMasters put emergency repair teams on standby and has commercial roof inspection services specialists available to help expedite the insurance claims process. Roofing contractors helped West Des Moines and Clive, Iowa, business owners make a full recovery after a hailstorm pounded the region on August 19, 2022.
Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage.
Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour.
The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind.
If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) are covered with a durable shrink-wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place. That way you can prevent mold growth from water intrusion.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
