On Tuesday, pea-sized to baseball-sized hail dropped, with rain, wind gusts up to 80 mph, and a tornado, in Midland and the surrounding areas. Northwest Midland received one-half inch of rain, in less than an hour. Early evening, a tornado hit ground along highway 158 and moved into Sterling County.

After the rains blew by, winds reaching 38 mph and gusts of 51 mph were recorded at Midland International. An Ef-1 tornado was confirmed at 95 mph, with a path of 7.4 miles and maximum width of 100 yards. Large trees were downed, tree limbs snapped, and some homes had roof damage. More damage to buildings occurred from wind gusts than the tornado, roofs blown off a house in Meadow and in Monument, and shingles blown off a roof in Gardendale, to name a few.

RestoreMasters crews have been in Texas recently due to another storm in the panhandle, on May 1. They sent a crew over to work in the Midland area, in order to alleviate the details of everything from insurance reporting to final restoration, which can be overwhelming to a property owner.

The blue tag on the local hail and wind map, marking Midland, TX, shows that area and surrounding communities hit by very large hail, larger than 2.5 inches (purple). Areas further out received hail in the golf ball to tennis ball-sized range (dark orange), then northward the stones that dropped were smaller half dollar (orange) to quarter-sized (yellow). The gray areas in the southward side of the storm indicate heavy winds, up about 70 mph, and a tornado.

Large hail drops at high speeds in the 40 to 75 mph range, without winds, but adding up to 70 mph wind these stones are sure to cause great damage to building roofs, sidings, windows and gutters. RestoreMasters has been providing all the necessary knowledge and skills to aid property owners in getting their buildings back into pre-storm condition, as well as providing emergency remediation, by tarping or shrink wrapping roofs and providing care of and prevention of water damage, due to the severely heavy rainfall that occurred in that storm and likely will occur again as the stormy season continues.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail.

Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.

The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.

In situations where you've got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected.

Symptoms of storm damage problems do not always show up immediately.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
