Supercell storms stretching from Fort Smith to Russellville, Arkansas, pummeled cities and towns with massive ice stones on Monday, April 11th, and spotters reported tornados adding to the hail damage on roofs. RestoreMasters dispatched field crews to Western Arkansas to affect immediate commercial roof repair before rainfall causes structural damage. Channel 5 News reports that severe weather fronts crossed into the state along the Arkansas River at Fort Smith, picking up intensity and dropping hailstones larger than baseballs from Central City to Lavaca and into Bloomer. The 5 News Weather Team also indicated that hail upwards of 2 inches in diameter fell from Caulksville to Paris, with ice striking communities from Subiaco to Shoal Creek and New Blaine, as well. The hailstorm appeared to gain strength as it advanced into the state and a funnel cloud reportedly touched down near Bloomer, causing widespread property and roof damage from Sebastian through Pope County. Local hail damage maps show a massive storm that stretches from east of Panama, OK, all the way to Russellville, Arkansas, and no neighborhoods appeared to be spared from the hard impacts of ice fall. Downtown Fort Smith shows yellow radar representing 1-inch ice balls. But southern Fort Smith districts are highlighted in orange as 2-inch ice hammered neighborhoods causing substantial roof damage. Much of the lengthy storm pounded communities with 1-inch and 2-inch hard ice. But perhaps the worst hail property damage occurred in Charleston and New Blaine where residents were forced to remain indoors or get hammered by ice ranging from 3 inches in diameter to some the size of grapefruits.
Fort Smith-Russellville, AR Hail Map - April 11, 2022
Hailstones cause damage throughout the area, and storm reports by citizens cover social media.
The National Weather Service hail damage maps show a destructive weather pattern that encompasses 69 hailstone falls, 9 tornados, and another 9 high-wind reports sweeping the region. Local and national storm data reporting concludes the following communities suffered damage that requires emergency roofing personnel to implement immediate roof leak repair before further losses are incurred.

  • Bloomer: Local news reports show video evidence a twister touched down and at least one roof was reportedly torn open. Widespread debris and reports of hailstones larger than 3 inches rank this area of Sebastian County among the hardest hit.
  • Branch: Hail doused the area with stones the size of baseballs colliding with rooftops.
  • Charleston: Tornado cleanup was in effect as trees were uprooted, outbuildings destroyed, and roofs were torn open. Tornado property damage was exacerbated by buildings being thrashed by ice stones the size of large apples.
  • Fort Smith: The city suffered among the heaviest ice downfall and hail property damage with ice exceeding 2.5 inches during multiple drops.
  • Lavaca: Slammed by hail at approximately 5:18 pm, photos of community members showing ice stones next to golf balls and light bulbs circulated on social media.
  • New Blaine: Smashed by ice stones upwards of the size of softballs, roof leak repair services are critical. Residential and commercial building owners will likely experience water damage as storms move west into Arkansas.
  • Scranton: A twister touched ground to the east causing roof wind damage as it blazed a path around Highway 197.

Logan County communities such as Ratcliff, Subiaco, Delaware, areas of Crawford County, and Pope County, all felt the brunt of the Monday, April 11th, hailstorms and tornados. RestoreMasters roof repair specialists recently responded to Springdale, Arkansas, following tornado property damage in March 2022.

Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged. Some storm damage symptoms take time to appear. And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
