Tornadoes cut a path through Texas and Southern Oklahoma on Monday, March 21st, taking the life of at least one woman and damaging homes and businesses across the region. Following devastation like this, property owners are left wondering what to do after a tornado hits. RestoreMasters has been working tirelessly with commercial property owners in the Kingston and Madill, Oklahoma, region to make emergency roof repairs and prevent further damage.

Weather reports indicate that upwards of 20 heavy funnel clouds touched down. A pair wreaked havoc on Marshall County just one month shy of the two-year anniversary of the devastating tornado that struck the area in 2020, killing two people and leaving at least one critically injured. The recent extreme weather event reportedly destroyed the Texoma Southern Baptist church, D&D Dispensary, and multiple businesses suffered roofs being shredded. Kingston’s schools were closed the following day, and outreach efforts were made to house displaced residents.

The Marshall County tornado path map below highlights massive swaths of land where damaging winds and tornadoes made their way. One pattern shows a high-wind tract starting outside Thackerville, trailing across Madill and beyond Milburn. Another struck east of Denison, continued its wake of destruction through Bokchito, and slowed before it reached Lane and Highway 3. The tornado, signified as black on the map, roared past Lake Texoma before carving a quarter-mile wide path through Kingston.

More than 65,000 homes and businesses across Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas were left without power. A large storage facility in Kingston was left gutted, as the metal structure was peeled apart.

The storm reports below represent a small sample of the dozens of reports found on social media.

National Weather Service radar for Monday, March 21st, indicates the 20 twisters inflicted substantial damage across the following Oklahoma communities.

  • Courtney - Located in Love County, power lines to the east were downed, and roofs suffered significant damage.
  • Willis - The Marshall County community felt the impact of the high winds along the Buncombe Creek area. Buildings were damaged, and trees toppled.
  • Kingston - Tornado winds struck areas along Highway 70, east of Kingston. Damage to the Dollar General was included in early reports. However, multiple buildings sustained roof and structural damage.
  • Nida - This Johnston County area suffered power outages, tree falls, and building devastation along Highway 22.
  • Milburn - Several manufactured homes suffered roof destruction as power lines were severed to the southeast.

Tornado season in Oklahoma typically runs from March through June, but twisters can potentially present at any time. March and April usually see the greatest number of tornadoes. The state has been devastated by more than 277 tornadoes during the month of March alone since 1950. These include 82 that were categorized as “strong,” and four considered “violent” wind events. RestoreMasters field crews recently responded to tornado destruction in Arkansas after an EF-3 tornado ripped through Springdale.

In Texas, a tornado rolled through Round Rock. Another Texas tornado struck Jacksboro, ripping two schools apart, while 2-inch hail punished New Braunfels.

Residential and commercial property owners are urged to effect immediate emergency roof repairs to prevent subsequent storms from dousing structures with rain. Water penetrations can cause structural supports to weaken and hazardous mold growths behind walls.

Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
