Roofing Contractor Deployed After Unusual Hail Storm In Longview-Marshall Area Of Texas, January 19, 2022

Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Disaster Response Team

Jan 20, 2022

A significant weather system producing large amounts of hail slammed the Longview and Marshall, Texas areas on Wednesday, January 19th, causing extensive damage to buildings, vehicles, and more. To help assist with the repair process, RestoreMasters has dispatched teams to the region.

While it was a relatively minor storm in comparison to what this part of the state experiences during the traditional storm season, it was an unusual occurrence for the wintertime. Local media outlets and social media users reported seeing chunks of ice completely covering the ground and roadways. In addition, the storm happened in a short period of time, causing residents to scramble for cover.

RestoreMasters wants to remind commercial businesses that hail as small as an inch in diameter can cause significant damage to roofing materials, windows, and more. Thus, we encourage all property owners to inspect buildings thoroughly for any potential issues. Failure to do so could result in leaks, mold, or other problems during and after future storms. In addition, it is important to check all roofing materials to spot any potential degradation of materials due to normal wear.

According to local hail maps, the majority of the hail spread from White Oak to just over the Oklahoma state line. Most communities experienced hail 1" to 1.25" in size (yellow). Others had  1.25" to 1.75" chunks (orange) or 1.75" to 2.5" (dark orange). The swath of the storm encompassed a large stretch of the Texas Panhandle, causing damage in numerous counties and towns along the way.

To assist commercial property owners, RestoreMasters plans to keep teams within the community. With staff specifically trained to assist with repairs after large hailstorms, we are committed to ensuring our clients get the attention and quality service necessary. Furthermore, we can assist with tasks like navigating the insurance process, mitigating additional damage, and handling repairs through completion.

Based on National Weather Service records, large amounts of hail occurred in the Texas counties of:

  • Gregg — Social media reports of hail completely covering the ground and roadways near Longview. Sizes ranged from a quarter to half-dollar in size.
  • Harrison — Hail as large as 2.5” in diameter located near Marshall. Quarter-sized chunks were reported in Waskom, and half-dollar sized pieces in Hallsville.
  • Nacogdoches — Falling hail around an inch in diameter just over the Nacogdoches County line near Angelina County.

Oftentimes, along with hail storms, high winds, and strong gusts also plague communities. Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
