Roofing Contractor Responds Within Hours to Fix Roof Hail Damage in Sebring, FL Following April 4, 2022 Storm
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Widespread hail crushed the city of Sebring, Florida on Monday, April 4, 2022. Local residents and trained spotters with the National Weather Service reported multiple instances of golf ball size hail across northern Highlands County, Florida. This storm also accompanied a big hail storm that hit LaBelle further south. Firsthand accounts from social media appear to show hail up 2 inches in diameter (and bigger) as it pounded holes in car windows, battered the sides of buildings, and caused punctures in various roofs across the region.
After the storm was over, RestoreMasters immediately dispatched teams of restoration professionals from its offices in Sarasota to assist Sebring property owners with disaster cleanup efforts, emergency roofing and tarping, and to begin the process of restoration for property damage after this storm.
The Miami Herald reports claims of baseball size hail in some areas. Multiple photos show car windows with holes punched all the way through, while other reports indicate buildings with siding that is peppered with damage. As you would expect from a hailstorm of this size, window screens were torn out as hailstones broke through windows and allowed ice chunks and moisture to enter buildings. The roofs on dozens of residential and commercial structures will require total replacement following this storm.
Hail maps of the Sebring storm show that big hail up to 2.5 inches (dark orange) fell in an area that started just west of Lake Jackson and extended over heavily populated areas through Avon Park and further north over Lake Arbuckle. Hailstones up to 1.75 inches (orange) created a wider band of damaging hail with 1 to 1.25-inch diameter (yellow) hail created long bands of hail damage from Florida State Road 66 southwest of Sebring up State Road 60 and the southern tip of Lake Kissimmee.
Big hail like this is always a major concern for commercial building owners. According to restoration experts at RestoreMasters, hail as small as 1-inch diameter can cause significant damage to roofing materials. Even when your roof appears normal from ground level, a close inspection by an experienced roofing contractor can reveal problems that could lead to roof leaks or a shortened roof life. In response to this hail storm, our teams recommend property owners get a professional inspection to see if you have damage.
The storm reports below represent a small sample of the dozens of reports found on social media.
It was unstable today with very cold air aloft which resulted in thunderstorms producing large hail. Many of them were over the Everglades. - Hardee - a web cam caught a skinny tornado 7 miles east of Wauchula, between Wauchula and Sebring.
- Highlands - multiple reports of golf ball sized hail. Intense hail whipped up by torrential rain and strong wind gusts pelted property in Avon Park. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office reported instances of car windows smashed in Venus. Trees were toppled, and some people were without power.
- Hendry - areas in and around LaBelle reported quarter sized and half dollar sized hail, with a report from WINK news of hail up to 2 inches in diameter. A car was reported dented from large hail along Highway 80 near the Glades County border.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
