Roofing for Hail Damage in Oklahoma City From May 3, 2021 Storms
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
RestoreMasters emergency roofing and repair teams are jumping into action in communities around Oklahoma City after strong storms dropped damaging hail on Monday night.
The storm formed a line of hail from Pawnee, pushing South to Cushing, Chandler, Meeker, Shawnee, and Tecumseh. Oklahoma City metro area South of downtown and Norman were also heavily affected by this storm, with extensive damage to buildings seen in Norman.
The area managed to avoid tornados this time, but still saw strong winds and surprisingly large hailstones. And this storm piggybacks off a storm last week that saw – in Norman – hail shattering skylights in a local Wal-Mart, and hail poured into the store, causing millions in damage. This was just one of several large storms last night that also affected communities in Texas, where softball sized hailstones punched through roofs and into homes and businesses.
It only takes a 1″ or above diameter hail stone to cause damage to asphalt shingles, and KOCO News 5 reported hail as large as large as tennis balls in Meeker, and the largest hailstones from this storm were reported in Dale, at 2.5”.
Hailstones typically produced by severe thunderstorms can fall 25-40 miles per hour. Hail 2-4” in diameter can reach speeds as fast as 70mph. Roof damage from hail and high-speed winds often goes unnoticed until property owners start seeing leaks or cracks.
Local hail maps indicate Chandler, Meeker, and Shawnee communities were hit the hardest in this hailstorm, with several reports of hail 1.5” or larger (red and orange). Additional areas that may be seeing damage form this storm include Atoka, Coal, Garvin, Hughes, McClain, Lincoln, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, and Seminole counties.
Studies show that 1″ diameter hail can cause damage to common asphalt shingles, and hail in excess of 1.5″ diameter may damage nearly all roofing systems to some extent.
