Roofing for Hail Damage in San Antonio From May 3, 2021 Storms
Commercial Roofing & Restoration

RestoreMasters emergency roofing and repair teams are quickly stepping in to help recovery efforts in San Antonio, Texas after strong storms dropped damaging hail on Monday. This is the third major hailstorm to affect San Antonio and the surrounding area in the last 30 days, leaving many property owners concerned about their roof integrity.
Our roof repair teams have been working around the clock in San Antonio for weeks already, helping commercial property owners with roof hail damage insurance claims from the storms that passed through April 12th and 28th. Monday’s storm caused a new round of devastating property damage. This was just one of several large storms last night that also affected communities in North Texas and Oklahoma, where softball sized hailstones punched through roofs and into homes and businesses.
It only takes a 1″ or above diameter hail stone to cause damage to asphalt shingles, and KSAT 12 reported hail as large as baseballs, with the largest reported at 3” near Brady Gardens. At least one instance of 4”+ hail was reported in Hondo, Texas, West of San Antonio.
Hailstones typically produced by severe thunderstorms can fall 25-40 miles per hour. Hail 2-4 inches in diameter can reach speeds as fast as 70mph. Roof damage from hail and high-speed winds often goes unnoticed until property owners start seeing leaks or cracks.
Local hail maps indicate the heart of San Antonio was hit the hardest this time, with hailstones 1.5” or more (orange and red) falling across the city and out towards Seguin, while a band of 2.5” or larger (purple) hailstones concentrated over the city center.
An area Southwest of Boerne was also hit hard, with hail as large as 2.75” reported at Tapatio Springs. 1.5” and larger hail also fell north through Sisterdale, Kendalia, Blanco, and Johnson City communities. Storm chasers and local news reported the storm affecting parts of Medina, Bandera, Kerr, Blanco, Gillespie, Kendall and Bexar Counties.
Studies show that 1" diameter hail can cause damage to common asphalt shingles, and hail in excess of 1.5" diameter may damage nearly all roofing systems to some extent.
