Roofing for Wind Damage in Atlanta From May 3, 2021 Tornado
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
The RestoreMasters Disaster Response Team deployed to Atlanta following Monday’s tornado. The National Weather Service reported that an EF-1 tornado was on the ground for 1.5 miles in Douglas County. It cut a path 250 yards wide through residential and commercial areas.
In addition to tornado activity, strong winds caused severe wind damage to roofs, windows and walls. There were reports of a partially collapsed apartment building at Riverside Drive and Fulton Industrial Drive, downed trees and multiple metal roofs torn off. Many homes and commercial buildings also experienced severe shingle and siding damage from this storm.
Our Atlanta roof repair teams have been working around the clock in Atlanta, helping commercial property owners with roof wind damage and tree damage insurance claims. Monday’s storm comes on the heels of a strong thunderstorm that produced hail as big as 1.75″ on April 24. Monday’s storm was one of several large storms that blew across the south on Monday. Storms in Texas and Oklahoma dropped grapefruit sized hail in some areas punching holes in rooftops and shredding siding.
Tornado winds can be incredibly destructive. Some older roofing systems can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and quality of original roof installation.
Monday’s tornado produced sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, enough to rip roofing materials and siding off of buildings. Falling trees and debris cause additional damage.
After a storm like this, it’s important to have your roof professionally inspected to determine whether or not you have damage. If leaks area occurring, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you were not in the direct path of the tornado, you may want to get your roof inspected. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
The following counties in Georgia reported some type of damage: Douglas, Fulton, Walton, Madison, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Gwinnett, Barrow, Butts, Monroe, Clarke, Baldwin, Crawford, Washington, Houston, Burke, Bartow and others.
Communities and neighborhoods in the path of severe winds included: Doublegate, South Fulton, Fairplay, McWhorter, Druid Hills, Clairmont, Lavista, Briarcliff, Virginia Highlands, Emory, North Druid Hills, North Decatur, Clarkson, Tucker and others.
Below is a map that shows paths for the strongest winds. The tornado path is indicated in dark gray crossing Highway 6 and Interstate 285.
