Disaster Response Team

Sep 23, 2021

A strong weather event affected the Shawnee Mission, Kansas area on Monday, September 20th, producing high winds, hail, and torrential rains. In response to the incident, RestoreMasters has deployed our emergency teams within the area to assist with removal and cleanup tasks.

Residents in this section of the Kansas City metropolitan area experienced hail as large as 2” in diameter in certain areas. While the region does have quite a few rural areas, the vast majority of Shawnee Mission is homes and businesses that were affected by this incident.

To put this in perspective, RestoreMasters is reminding commercial building owners that hail as small as an inch in diameter can create significant amounts of damage to roofing materials. In turn, this damage can allow water to seep into the building, causing flooding and mold damage if left untreated. With plenty of opportunity for further storms this summer, we are encouraging all property owners to thoroughly check for damage.

According to local weather maps, the heaviest of the hail fell near the intersection of 83rd Street and Gleason Road. Data shows that this neighborhood experienced hail measuring 1.25” to 1.75” in diameter (orange). Other areas in and around Shawnee Mission and Lenexa saw smaller hail in the 1” to 1.25” range (yellow).

Due to the concentration of properties and buildings within the region, RestoreMasters intends to stay within the area for the foreseeable future. Our goal is to help our customers through the entire removal, repair, and restoration process and ensure they’re ready for any other potential weather events this season.

Based on data from the National Weather Service, the storm produced high winds and hail throughout the Kansas Counties of:

  • Johnson — Residents in Shawnee and Merriam experienced hailstones as large as an inch in diameter. In Lake Quivira, dime sized hail was also present.
  • Clay — Damaging hail in the 1.25” range fell near Liberty, causing issues for local property owners.
  • Neosho — Chunks of falling hail as large as 2” fell in Erie, while Saint Paul experienced ice chunks around 1.75”.

In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
