Warner Robins was the center of a relentless hailstorm and multiple tornadoes that battered buildings across Central Georgia for more than eight hours on Wednesday, April 6th. Property damage was widespread, and RestoreMasters sent field crews to impacted cities and towns to secure roofs before rainfall floods commercial buildings. Large ice stones and high winds typically crack and tear roofs. Subsequent water penetrations ruin equipment, inventory, and cause structural damage.

A breaking news report from 13 WMAZ indicated a storm sliced through the Statham’s Landing subdivision, snapping pine trees, ripping off roofs, flinging debris, with the nearby Southern Landings Golf Course taking the brunt of high winds. Police cruisers were reportedly dispatched, and residents credited severe weather alert sirens from Robins Air Force Base with giving them time to shelter in place. One resident told 13 WMAZ the community was “blessed” to have the airbase siren and phone alert early warning systems in place.

The Rosa Taylor Elementary closed Wednesday due to storm damage, and thousands were left without power. Storm maps indicate hail dropped to the southeast of Marshallville across Highway 341 and Highway 16, slowing west of Ripley. Warner Robins, GA, Hail Tornado Map - April 6, 2022

Homes and communities sustained a great deal of damage. Personal accounts of the storm and aftermath showed up throughout social media.

Few Central Georgia cities and towns were spared property damage as high winds and twisters ripped at homes and commercial buildings. National Weather Service radar maps tracked storms across Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These are among the communities that saw the heaviest damage on Wednesday, April 6th.

  • Lee County: A tornado cut a path from south of Cobb across Lee and Sumter counties. Trailing to the northeast, areas near Lake Blackshear were impacted. Golf ball-sized hail pelted homes and businesses in Smithville and Leesburg during the afternoon.
  • Lowndes County: Trees and power lines were downed at the intersection of Rowland and Ousley roads in Nankin. Trained spotters reported a funnel cloud touching down in the area, felling trees, and gouging roofs.
  • Bleckley County: More than 20 trees were toppled along Interstate 16 in Allentown.
  • Colquitt: Tornado winds leveled trees across several county roads along the Worth-Colquitt line.
  • Emanuel County: A tornado tore trees from their roots along Highway 80 near Kemp Road in Norristown Junction.
  • Brooks County: High winds snapped trees, leaving Coffee Road in Barwick blocked.
  • Colleton County: A tornado upwards of 100 yards wide blazed a one-mile trail after touching down near Alison Lane in Walterboro before racing west and leaving a wake of destruction.
  • Houston County: Warner Robins sustained the heaviest hail damage as ice stones the size of golf balls struck roofs and automobiles. Elko was blanketed by 1-inch ice balls at approximately 2:46 pm.

Other cities and towns that sustained wind and hail damage include Cuthbert in Randolph County, Byron in Peach County, Toomsboro in Wilkinson County, Hillsboro in Jasper County, Lithia Springs in Douglas County, as well as Whiteside and Guild in Dade County. RestoreMasters crews responded to communities devastated by hail and tornadoes outside Savannah on Tuesday, April 5th. Business owners are urged to reach out for assistance securing roofs before another storm exacerbates property damage.

Hail larger than 1 inch can damage roofing systems, and tornadoes can strip them right off buildings. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
