Tornado & Hail Storm on June 18, 2021 Cause Severe Roof Damage in Dayton, Ohio
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
A highly dangerous storm system passed through Dayton, Ohio on Friday, June 18th, packing a punch and spewing moderate hail, high winds, and even a brief EF1 tornado. RestoreMasters currently has teams in the area assisting commercial property owners with cleanup related tasks like emergency roof repairs, hail damage reports, and other mitigation efforts.
Strong winds uprooted several trees across the region, downed power lines, and damaged multiple structures. Damage to vehicles due hail and other issues were also reported. Flooding was a major concern for residents and over 1,000 people were without power the next day. Of course, the end of the storm capped off with a picturesque rainbow, leading many battered residents to take a snapshot of the event.
Storm maps indicate areas with hail ranging from 1.75” to 2.5” in diameter (dark orange). However, most of the region experienced smaller amounts in the 1” to 1.5” range (yellow). It is important to keep in mind that roof damage can occur with hailstones as small as an inch, making it imperative that all property owners adequately inspect buildings to prevent further issues.
RestoreMasters remains committed to helping customers with all of their post-storm cleanup needs. We will continue to keep our experts in the area to ensure commercial property owners have what they need to return to pre-storm conditions, even if it takes a few weeks or months to achieve.
According to National Weather Service reports, the storm caused a significant amount of damage and even briefly spurred a tornado within the following Ohio counties:
- Greene – Hailstones measuring 2.5” in diameter near Beavercreek. Large trees downed by gusty winds in Fairborn. Heavy winds and hail in Xenia.
- Montgomery – A confirmed EF1 tornado with a path length of 2.1 miles near Gratis. Chunks of hail ranging from 1” to 1.75” in Downtown Dayton, Trotwood, Northridge, and Clayton. Damage to cars reported throughout the county. Multiple reports of fallen branches and uprooted trees, plus some reports of structural damage to porches, garages, and barns.
- Preble – Trees and power lines down in Eaton.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
