Three supercells swept across Iowa on Saturday, March 5th, producing 13 confirmed tornadoes and widespread property damage. A pair of supercells dumped hailstones and impacted southern Iowa with a reported three distinct, intense wind events. But the largest supercell wreaked havoc across southeastern Iowa, Des Moines, eastern communities and resulted in numerous tornadoes tearing roofs off buildings. RestoreMasters is responding to help affected property owners secure impacted roofs before another severe weather event moves into the region.

National Weather Service radar indicates the largest of the tornadoes struck counties that include Madison, Warren, Polk, and Jasper. One twister followed a 70-mile path with high winds reaching upwards of 170 mph. Considered an EF-4 level weather event, the massive tornado is the first of its magnitude to bring devastation to Iowa communities since October 4, 2013. The previous EF-4 battered Woodbury and Cherokee counties.

Hail, Tornado Path Map Des Moines, Iowa - March 5, 2022

Local weather maps and wide-reaching reports show hailstones fell on cities and towns stretching a pattern west of Creston, northeast into Des Moines, and just northwest of Grinnell. Communities including Newton, Ankeny, Winterset, Macksburg, and Orient, among others, experienced hailstone impacts in conjunction with high winds. The National Weather Service reports the following counties suffered through the following.

  • Winterset through Newton – An EF-4 tornado dug a path 69.5 miles long, bringing winds of 170 mph while crossing Madison, Warren, Polk, and Jasper counties from 4:26 p.m. to 6:01 p.m. local time. Five injuries and six fatalities were initially reported as residential and commercial buildings sustained heavy damage.
  • Garden Grove and Humeston – An EF-2 brought 122 mph winds to Wayne and Lucas counties between 5:07 and 5:31 p.m. local time. Following a path nearly 18 miles long, the twister developed and trekked to the northeast of Leon, skimming the outskirts of Garden Grove and Humeston. It lost intensity before striking Derby in Lucas County.
  • Chariton, Red Haw State Park – An EF-3 drove winds upwards of 138 mph to the south of Chariton and toward Red Haw State Park. The 16.5-mile path resulted in one injury and one fatality.
  • Allerton, Corydon – Delivering winds rated at 118 mph, an EF-2 impacted Wayne County. Developing near Allerton, the tornado skirted southwest areas and then tracked northeast to the east of Corydon.
  • Kellogg – An EF-2 carrying winds above 110 mph hit areas of Jasper, Poweshiek, and Tama counties. The tornado produced a berth that reached 400 yards wide at its peak.
  • Tama County – Residents sustained 115 mph winds over 8.6 miles as the EF-2 widened to a football field and a half at its peak.

All told, 13 separate tornados ravaged Iowa on Saturday, March 5th. Weather reporting organizations were unable to categorize several high-wind incidents. The experienced professionals at RestoreMasters responded to the big Des Moines hail storm in July 2021, and now urge Iowa property owners to schedule prompt inspections to ensure insurance adjusters expedite claims. Field workers are on call to secure roofs to prevent rain from seeping into buildings.

In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
