Wind & Hail Storm Causes Roof Damage Near Russell, KS on August 10, 2021
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Severe storms passed through Russell, Kansas on Tuesday, August 10th, producing large hail and high winds. This storm comes on the heels of hail storms that hit western Kansas on August 7. RestoreMasters had dispatched teams to the area following that storm and also the Hays, KS hail storm to assist with mitigation tasks like damage inspections, emergency roof repairs, and other efforts.
Wind appeared to be the greatest threat with this line of thunderstorms. Areas like Lincoln and Russell County experienced measurable gusts over 70 MPH -- more than enough to damage local buildings. A barn was reportedly damaged in Sylvan Grove when the guy wire holding it in place snapped.
Additionally, extremely large baseball sized hailstones hit near Asherville. Hail of this caliber is large enough to completely destroy roofing shingles, smash windshields, and more. Usually, damage as small as an inch in diameter is more than enough to cause significant issues.
Looking at local hail maps, it appears the most serious hailstones fell from near Lucas toward the southwest into LaCrosse. Some areas received hail around 1.25” to 1.75” (orange), with others getting chunks as large as 1.75” to 2.5” (dark orange).
At RestoreMasters, we aim to help all commercial property owners assess damage related to the storm and begin the repair process. We plan on keeping trained personnel in the area through the coming weeks as repair efforts continue.
Despite the path of damage across Interstate 70, the majority of the worst part of the storm happened over farmland and highly rural communities. According to the National Weather Service, hail or damaging winds were reported in the Kansas counties of:
- Russell – Hailstones measuring 1” to 1.75” in conjunction with 50 MPH sustained winds. Measured wind gusts of 61 MPH and 70 MPH at the Russell Airport. Additionally, 59 MPH winds near Luray.
- Mitchell – Baseball sized hailstones in Asherville. Dime and quarter sized hail in the towns of Beloit and Hunter.
- Lincoln – 67 MPH and 77 MPH wind gusts observed in Ash Grove. Snapped power poles and a demolished barn in Sylvan Grove. Dime sized hail in the area.
- Rush – 1” to 1.75” hailstones near Liebenthal. 2” chunks of hail fell in Loretta.
In addition to roof damage from hail, strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage. Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour. The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind. If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) is covered with a durable shrink wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
