Massive Commercial Roof Repair Undertaking Follows Hail & Wind Devastation to Kearney, Southern Nebraska on Friday, April 29, 2022

Hail the size of grapefruits destroyed roofs and shattered windshields across Kearney County while a pair of tornados ripped at buildings in Southern Nebraska on Friday, April 29th. RestoreMasters alerted emergency roof repair crews that prompt roof leak repair efforts must be brought to bear to secure commercial properties ahead of another wave of severe weather.

The Lincoln Star Journal and other outlets provided advanced warnings that twisters and hailstorms were likely to hit during the early evening and persist late into the night.

“The storms that moved east across the state after developing in southwest Nebraska dropped large hail in some areas. In Kearney County, grapefruit-sized hail was reported with storms around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Axtell area. Hail the size of tennis balls was reported near Beaver City in Furnas County,” the Lincoln Star Journal reported. And noting high wind events, “tornadoes left a path as wide as a football field with peak winds estimated at 93 mph. They moved through the Douglas area about 20 miles southeast of Lincoln just after 8:10 p.m.”

Widespread wind and hail damage to roofing systems is expected to require additional emergency repair specialists to protect commercial buildings from the elements before fast-moving rainstorms cause further inventory, equipment, and structural damage. A local hailstorm damage map shows thick hailstorms hovering over Kearney, Axtell, Minden, and one trailing east of Juniata toward Hastings. The yellow areas highlight hail up to 1.25 inches in diameter peppering residential areas and business centers. Thick orange swaths point to ice stones as large as 2.5 inches inflicting heavy roof storm damage in municipalities such as Kearney.

The National Weather Service high wind, tornado, and hailstorm damage map tracker shows a massive storm cluster primarily impacting Kansas and Nebraska on Friday, April 29th. All told, the national weather reporting system accounted for 25 tornados, 146 high wind incidents, and 97 hail reports. Wide-reaching reports conclude the following Nebraska cities and towns sustained significant roof damage.

  • Alma: Ping pong ball-sized ice cracked shingles and exposed property at approximately 5:30 pm.
  • Axtell: Initial reports on social media platforms indicated ice the size of golf balls battered rooftops and automobiles. Later reports show ice the size of tennis balls creating hail roof damage.
  • Beaver City: Ice as large as tennis balls forced residents to shelter in place and assess property damage after the hailstorms passed.
  • Holbrook: On-site measurements confirmed hail the size of baseballs was responsible for damage requiring roof leak repair specialists.
  • Jefferson County: Cities and towns along the Kansas border, such as Diller, Jansen, and Endicott, were blanketed by quarter-sized ice.
  • Kearney: The seat of Buffalo County suffered multiple strikes throughout the evening.
  • Minden: The Kearney County Seat took the brunt of the hailstorms with ice larger than grapefruits causing widespread roof and property damage.
  • Republican City: Hail, the size of golf balls, belted commercial buildings, and automobiles just before 6 pm.
  • Stamford: Property owners in the Harland County community saw hailstones the size of hen eggs batter buildings.
  • Thayer County: Davenport was peppered by 1-inch icefall while buildings in Deshler were struck by larger hail.
  • Wymore: Gage County residents experienced hard impacts from ice the size of a quarter.

High winds plagued Southern Nebraska throughout the evening, with Nuckolls County experiencing winds clocked at 68 mph, Clay County at 70 mph, Hall County at 72 mph, and Thayer County sustaining the most severe as gusts reached 91 mph. RestoreMasters recently put emergency roofing teams in the field after hail devastated communities in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles on Friday, April 22, 2022.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail. Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds. The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

It's important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment following severe weather like this so that you can determine whether you have roof damage from hail or high winds. In situations where you've got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.
Even if you don't think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map. Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately. And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
