Roofing for Hail Damage in Dallas From May 3, 2021 Storms

The Dallas-Fort Worth area had just reached highest temperatures for 2021, but a cold front moving into the area brought some intense storms and at least two confirmed tornados in North Texas.

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported large hail and strong winds across the region, including areas in and around Azle, Aledo and Argyle. The storm caused damage across several Texas counties, including Tarrant, Dallas, Ellis, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Hill, Hood, Johnson, Parker and Wise, leaving thousands of property owners concerned about the hail damage to their roof.

The hail left an approximate 20-mile track of destruction damaging vehicles, trees, and businesses. This was just one of several large storms last night reported by the National Weather Service in other parts Texas including San Antonio and and in Oklahoma, where softball sized hailstones punched through roofs and into homes and businesses.

Hail golf ball-size and larger dropped down in areas including Parker, Hood and Johnson counties. The largest hailstones were reported in Rio Vista - over 3” in diameter. With big hail, it's important to get your roof inspected right away.

It only takes a 1″ or above diameter hailstone to cause damage to asphalt shingles. Hailstones typically produced by severe thunderstorms can fall 25-40 miles per hour. Hail 2-4” in diameter can reach speeds as fast as 70mph. Roof damage from hail and high-speed winds often goes unnoticed until property owners start seeing leaks or cracks.

Local hail maps indicate smaller hail fell all around the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area (yellow), with the larger chunks, 2.5” or more (purple) being reported to the southwest of the city. Other communities damaged by this storm include Blum and Waxahachie where storm chasers reported tornadic activity, as well as Granbury, Acton, Cresson, La Junta, Maypearl, Midlothian, Gunter, Howe and Sherman, each of which reported hailstones 1” or larger.

Studies show that 1" diameter hail can cause damage to common asphalt shingles, and hail in excess of 1.5" diameter may damage nearly all roofing systems to some extent.
